10th place for De la Parte in Vuelta Ciclista Murcia

Two CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders – Victor de la Parte and Łukasz Owsian – made the top 15 in the one-day Vuelta Ciclista a la Region de Murcia.

In the last few days I haven’t really felt very good, since I caught a cold during the training. I didn’t know how my body will react and I started the race without big expectations – Victor de la Parte said afterwards. – On the first climb my legs were solid and I managed to stay among the strongest 10 riders. After the top we were joined by few other guys and BMC Racing started pulling very hard. I lost contact with the first group 2 kilometers from the summit of the second hill, when Valverde and Gilbert attacked.  I am satisfied with the final result, because the level of the race was very high. I am also happy with the team’s performance – my teammates were great today.

The 200-kilometer race kicked off with a 6-man group breaking clear. It included Miguel Ángel Benito Diez (Caja Rural), Sander Helven (Topsport Vlaanderen – Baloise), Artem Ovechkin (Gasprom – Rusvelo), Kleber Da Silva Ramos (Funvic Soul Cycles – Carrefour), Benat Txoperena (Euskadi Basque Country – Murias) and Kamil Gradek (Verva Active Jet). They established almost 8 minutes of advantage, but the peloton had everything under control and brought the escape back in on the cat. 1 climb Alto Collado Bermejo.

Next move came from Movistar. Three of its riders – Ruben Fernández, Ion Izagirre, Alejandro Valverde – pulled away on the hardest ascent of the day and gained around 45-second gap. They didn’t stay up front for too long though, as they got caught by a 20-man group, with Victor de la Parte and Łukasz Owsian.

Another attack was launched on the last climb of the day – cat. 3, Alto Cresta del Gallo. The summit was located only 13 kilometers from the line. Teyaj van Gerderen (BMC Racing) took advantage of the hard terrain and went off alone. He crested the top by himself with a small lead and maintained it until 2 kilometers to go. This is where, he got caught by Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana), Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Ilnur Zakarin (Team Katusha), and his colleagues, Ben Hermans and Philippe Gilbert.

The race was decided in a 6-man sprinting battle. Gilbert had the most teammates around him in the finale, he finished off their work and secured a win. He edged out Valverde and Luis Leon Sanchez.

Victor de la Parte arrived over 1 minute behind the winner in 10th place. Also Łukasz Owsian put in great performance, as he took 15th.
