How it unfolded
It was another lively start to the stage. The breakaway went clear after many attempts, after 50 kilometers of racing, on first HC climb of the day. Jan Bakelandts (Ag2R), Tomasz Marczynski (Lotto-Soudal), Simone Petilli (UAE Team Emirates), Antonio Pedrero (Movistar), Michael Woods (Cannondale-Drapac), Ondrej Cink (Bahrain-Merida), Carlos Verona (ORICA-Scott), Philipp Deignan (Team Sky), Bart de Clerq (Lotto Soudal) and Matvey Mamykin (Astana) succeeded in their efforts, but were never given too much space. The maximum gap was at 2:50.
On the second climb of the day the breakaway fell apart and Woods covered almost the entire ascent by himself in the front.
Jan Hirt put on an “orange” show uphill, attacking from a reduced bunch, which was also still including Jakub Kaczmarek. Giro d’Italia sensation passed all the escapees but lone Woods. GC contenders were not going easy though and climbed with a strong pace. They caught Hirt few kilometers from the top and later left him behind.
Just before the summit Woods was joined by Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2R) and at that point the duo had 30-second gap. It started to rain on the other side of the mountain and the roads were wet and slippery. In those conditions Pozzovivo left Woods behind and soloed to victory. Rui Costa (UEA Team Emirates) finished 2nd and Ion Izagirre (Bahrain Merida) was 3rd. Jan Hirt came in in 18th place, 2:22 back.
Felix Grossschartner didn’t get to the line, as he had to abandon due to illness.
