Nikolay Mihaylov proudly presented his new kit of a Bulgarian champion, riding in a breakaway on stage 2 of Arctic Race of Norway.
Info: 11th of August, Sjøvegan – Bardufoss, 184,5km
How it unfolded
Nikolay Mihaylov tried his chances on yesterday’s stage and he repeated his move also today. Then, his attempt was neutralized, but this time the 6-man escape which he was a part of, was able to go clear and establish a solid advantage. The National Champion of Bulgaria pulled away with Zhandos Bizhigitov (Astana), Erwann Corbel (Fortuneo – Oscaro), Javier Megias (Team Novo Nordisk), Elias Angel Spikseth (Team FixIT.no) and Dimitri Claeys (Cofidis).
Final 32km of racing were held on a loop which went through military base in Bardufoss and the finishing straight ran on the airport runway. When Mihaylov’s group entered that circuit they still had 1:40 in hand.
Bulgarian was brought back in with 16km to go and the last escapee was caught 3 kilometers further. The stage ended as expected, with a bunch gallop and Aleksander Kristoff (Katusha-Alpecin) was the strongest of the sprinters. European champion edged out Hugo Hoffstatter (Cofidis) and Andrea Pasqualon (Wanty – Groupe Gobert). Michał Paluta was the highest placed CCC Sprandi Polkowice rider on the stage, taking 12th place.
