Alan Banaszek sprinted to 12th place in stage 2 of Abu Dhabi Tour. Mark Cavendish claimed the win and took over the GC lead.
The second day of racing featured 115 kilometers. As yesterday the competition was held in hot weather and on flat roads.
Jan Polanc (Lampre – Merida), Dion Smith, Samuel Williams (One Pro Cycling), Jens Keukeleire (Orica-BikeEschange), Stanislau Bazhkou (Mińsk Cycling Club) and Eugert Zhupa (Wilier – Southeast) broke clear early. Due to short distance they were never given a big gap, but managed to maintain a 2-minute lead for most of the day. The riders could again enjoy tailwind, as the average speed of the stage was 48km/h.
The gap was still relatively high, coming into the last 15km of racing. At that point the peloton was 1:40 behind, so it was still anybody’s race.
At the end of the day the bunch managed to calculate the chase perfectly, catching the escapees in the final kilometer. All CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders – including climbers Davide Rebellin and Jan Hirt – made their presence known at the head of the bunch in the finale, setting the pace for their sprinter Alan Banaszek.
The 19-year old youngster fought hard to position himself in the last corner. He was not afraid of the world class sprinters and managed to start the sprint with the fastest. He finished just outside the top 10, in 12th place.
Silver medalist of world championships, Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) sprinted to victory, beating Elia Viviani (Team Sky) and Andrea Guardini (Astana). The Brit took over the overall lead.
