After a late solo move Alan Banaszek won GP Doliny Baryczy – Memoriał Grundmana I Wizowskiego (1.2).
Info: June 17th, Milicz – Żmigród, 177km
Course: flat (laps around Milicz, Ruda Sułowska, Żmigród)
How it unfolded
The “orange squad” was very active and attentive right from the start and was able to send three of their men into the winning big breakaway, which in total included 18 riders. Łukasz Owsian, Piotr Brożyna and Alan Banaszek went clear after around 60 kilometers, as well as Sylwester Janiszewski (Wibatech 7r Fuji), Michał Podlaski (Voster), Mateusz Komar (Voster), Kamil Zieliński (Domin) or Artur Detko (Domin), among others. Initially, in chilly and rainy weather conditions the peloton was keeping an eye on the gap and maintained it under 2 minutes. But with 60km to go the bunch sat up and the gap skyrocketed.
Final 50km of racing saw lots of attacks in the front and CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders were aggressive too. With few kilometers to go Alan Banaszek managed to go clear solo and held off the chasers. He claimed the win defeating Konrad Gessner (Rad-net Rose) and Sylwester Janiszewski (Wibatech 7r Fuji).
The opening of the stage was very lively. I decided to jump away too, just too see who is in the front. When I realized that the breakaway is quite big and that it includes some quality riders I knew that we might go all the way. It was a very good situation for our team, since there was three of us from the “orange squad” in the lead – Alan Banaszek explained. – All the escapees contributed and pulled, including me. In the end one attack was followed by another. At one point Łukasz Owsian broke clear and chasing him cost our opponents a lot of energy. With 4km to go I was able to take off solo, building a small gap and holding on until the line.
Tomorrow is another race, Korona Kocich Gór. It’s held on a harder course, which doesn’t suit me that well, but I will give my best.
For young CCC Sprandi Polkowice it’s 6th victory of 2017 season, after taking three wins in UCI races and three in prologues (criteriums) of Polish stage-events.
