Davide Ballerini won Memorial Marco Pantani, a race, which didn’t go CCC Sprandi Polkowice’s way.
Info: September 22nd, Castrocaro Terme – Cesenatico, 199,8km
Breakaway of the day got established quite early, as it was already up the road with 10km into the race. 5 attackers quickly opened 6:15 lead, but peloton reacted as fast and brought it down to 3:40 after 70km of racing.
After the peloton reached halfway point of competition, the action in the bunch got heated. With still almost 100km to go, some of the biggest names decided to launch their early moves. Nairo Quintana, Domenico Pozzovivo, Matej Mohoric, Ben Hermans, Serge Pauwels, Warren Barguil were among those who put the hammer down uphill, breaking away and catching initial escape.
“Riders in orange” couldn’t mark these attacks, while the leading group kept pushing and extending their gap to over 3 minutes.
The winner came from that group and the fastest of it was Davide Ballerini (Androni Sidermec). David Gaudu (Groupama Fdj) finished 2nd and Francesco Gavazzi, Ballerini’s teammate, was 3rd.
CCC Sprandi Polkowice will not bring good memories from this event, since none of the riders arrived to the finish.
