Bałtyk-Karkonosze: Stępniak on the podium again

Grzegorz Stępniak (CCC Polsat Polkowice), after a field sprint, became the winner of stage 3 of the Bałtyk-Karkonosze Tour race. It has been another stage won during this year’s edition of the race. Tomasz Kiendyś (CCC Polsat Polkowice) is still the leader of the race.

Another, 3rd stage of the race was held along a 114-kilometre route around Zbąszynek, where both the starting and the finishing line was situated. First, the cyclists rode three laps in the town, then they went for the route leading through Siedlec, to return to the laps in Zbąszynek, and ride the finish. The route of the whole stage was very flat, which made the stage very quick, favourable to the riders specializing in sprint finishes.

From the very beginning the peloton imposed a very harsh pace, despite that there were numerous ‘leaps’, and attempts to break away. At about 60 kilometres five cyclists rode away, among them Piotr Gawroński and the Bulgarian Nikolay Mihaylov from CCC Polsat Polkowice. Before entering the final laps in Zbąszynek that break-away was eliminated and Marcin Sapa from BDC MarcPol launched a solitary attack. He gained a one-minute lead over the peloton, but the teams of BGŻ Team and CCC Polsat Polkowice working together harmoniously caused that in the last of the final laps Sapa’s break-away was eliminated. The teams leading-out their sprint cyclists got down to fighting for the stage win.

Grzegorz Stępniak (CCC Polsat Polkowice) reached for his next stage win, defeating his peer, Konrad Dąbkowski (BDC MarcPol) and the experienced sprint rider Adam Wadecki (BDC MarcPol), also a BDC rider.

I like such finishes very much – said Grzegorz Stępniak at the finishing line. I had been perfectly led-out by my team-mates, especially by: Bartek Matysiak and Sylwek Janiszewski, who were the last ones to bring me to the finishing line. The very end belonged to me only. I am glad that this way, with the immense support of the whole team, I am standing on the podium again, as a winner. I would like to thank them for that very much.

Tomasz Kiendyś (CCC Polsat Polkowice) is still the leader of the race after three stages. He is overtaking Łukasz Bodnar (BGŻ Team) by 5 seconds and Kamil Gradek (Cartusia Kartuzy) by 9 seconds.
