Info: August 21st, Zottegem – Zottegem, 202,9km
Course: undulating , 7 cobblestone sections
It was not one of those easy to predict races, with an early breakaway, big gap and peloton’s chase. It was very lively, exciting and fast-paced racing from the get-go. For a long time none of the escapes stuck and at the halfway point it was still all together.
Łukasz Owsian, Kamil Gradek and Jonas Koch were amongst the most aggressive riders and the latter two managed to slip into the 24-man group that went clear with 75km to go. They gained a minute on the bunch and then Paweł Bernas decided to bridge across and joined his two teammates in the front.
With not enough driving force, the main field was not able to close in on the attackers and the gap kept growing.
Inside the final 25km the action become much more lively, with one attack being launched after another. Lasse Norman Hansen, Aime De Gendt and Jermoe Baugnies went away, but Paweł Bernas started to chase, with two other riders. They jumped across to the leaders, but with 9km to go the trio accelerated again and Pole couldn’t respond. He finished in 6th place, while Baugnies took the win ahead of De Gendt and Hansen.
