BGŻ ProLiga: Marek Rutkiewicz losing the leader’s jersey.

On Tuesday Tomasz Smoleń (Bank BGŻ Team) won in Baboszewo near Płońsk the 24th cycling Memorial of Andrzej Trochanowski, the second this year event belonging to the prestigious cycle of BGŻ ProLiga and he took the lead in the general classification of the cycle.

During the field sprint Smoleń overtook Andrzej Bartkiewicz (Wibatech Ziemia Brzeska) and Sylwester Janiszewski (CCC Polsat Polkowice).

Marek Rutkiewicz (CCC Polsat Polkowice) the leader so far of BGŻ ProLiga arrived at the finishing line in a further position and he did not win any points for the general classification. Smoleń in the first race in Sobótka won 5 points, which together with the 40 points won in Baboszewo gave him the leading in the general classification of BGŻ ProLiga.

„That was the first race of the UCI calendar, and there’s no denying, there was the pressure. I was led-out to the head of the group a few hundred metres before the finishing line and my strength did not fail me. I am surprised myself, because I had not felt too well before the race, the mores so because that was not ‘my weather’. I prefer when it is cold, I am also not afraid of rain” – said Tomasz Smoleń waiting for the ceremony of awarding the leader’s jersey.

The Memorial of A.Trochanowski race is a race for sprint cyclists, so it is hard for me, preferring mountain riding, to be at the head of the classification of the race – said Marek Rutkiewicz at the finishing line. I hope that I lost it only for a while. Quite soon the race of Szlakiem Grodów Piastowskich starts, another race whose points are scored for BGŻ ProLiga. I care much about regaining the leader’s jersey in that classification, and at Grody I will fight for it again.

After two races of the BGŻ ProLiga cycle Tomasz Smoleń is before Marek Rutkiewicz (CCC Polsat Polkowice) by 5 points, and before Robert Radosz (BDC MarcPol) and Andrzej Bartkiewicz (Wibatech) by 15 points.

The next event of BGŻ ProLiga is the starting on 3 May race of Szlakiem Grodów Piastowskich. ‘Ahead of us a cycle of stage races, and I think that the leader of the classification will change frequently’ – commented on the course of the rivalry an expert on BGŹ ProLiga Ryszard Szurkowski.
