Grega Bole claimed 5th place in Memorial Marco Pantani. For Slovenian rider it was second consecutive time, when he finished inside top 5 in this race, after 2nd place last year.
“Riders in orange” didn’t make the day’s 4-man main breakaway. It included Van Zyl (MTN-Qhubeka), Zilioli (Androni-Sidermec), Brungger (Roth-Skoda) and Gazzara (MG Kvis Vega) and they established over 3,5-minute lead. The peloton didn’t let them enjoy that gap for too long and cut he differential to under one minute with 100 kilometers remaining.
Riders from the bunch started to counterattack and tried to bridge across. As a result a 17-man new leading group was formed. Race favorites – such as Grega Bole, Stefan Schumacher and Giovani Visconti, Diego Ulissi, Vincenzo Nibali, Enrico Gasparotto, Mauro Finetto, Marco Marcato – were among the escapees.
When it was still around 70 kilometers to go and the terrain was hilly, Nibali, Ulissi and Visconti pulled away. The Italian trio worked very well together and created over 2 minutes of advantage over the chasers, which included – aside from Bole and Schumacher, also Davide Rebellin. Eventually the chasing group and the peloton merged together.
Despite fast pace in the bunch, the escape managed survive until the finish. The race was decided in a 3-man sprint. Ulissi took advantage of his sprinter’s skills in the finale and claimed the win. Visconti was second and Nibali third.
Grega Bole was the second fastest man in the bunch and he was awarded with 5th place.
