Two CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders – Grega Bole and Maciej Paterski – finished in top 15 in the Spanish one-day event Clasica de Almeria.
After the last hill and the dangerous descent everyone wanted to be in the front and that made the race a little bit nervous. There was a crash with 1 or 1,5km to go and that had some impact on the final sprint. The head of the group stretched out and it was very hard to move up to the front. Etixx – Quick Step was going very fast and there was not much we could do – Grega Bole said afterwards. – Due to some illness I didn’t feel very well yesterday in Murcia and today. I had some headaches and I felt like I had a fever – he added.
I am not fully satisfied with today’s result because we are capable of claiming podium spots – Piotr Wadecki, team’s DS said. – If we did everything right in the final, somebody from our team could have finished right behind Cavendish. We would prefer to have one rider in the top 3-4 than two in the top 15. We will discuss it with the riders today, what went wrong and what to do, so it won’t happen again.
5 riders attacked early on – Unai Intziarte (Murias Taldea), Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale), Miguel Ángel Benito (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA), Roman Sicard (Team Europcar) and Arthur Van Overberghe (Topsport Vlaanderen – Baloise). Intziarte was the first one to get dropped from that group and later Bardet took off solo in the hilly part of the route. He was chased by Sicard and Benito and the duo managed to bridge the gap.
Eventually the escapees were caught with about 50km to go. They were reeled in by a reduced, 58-man peleton. Four CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders were in it – Maciej Paterski, Grega Bole, Adrian Honkisz and Łukasz Owsian. The group was controlled by the sprinters’ teams and it came down to a bunch sprint.
Mark Cavendish was able to survive the hardest part of the race in the front and was the man to beat in the final. He was lead-out perfectly by his teammate Mark Renshaw and took the win. Grega Bole claimed 8th place and Maciej Paterski finished 11th. CCC Sprandi Polkowice was among the most solid teams in the race since they were 2nd in the teams classification.
