How it unfolded
CCC Sprandi Polkowice got off to a very good start as Maciej Paterski, Jonas Koch, Marcin Białobłocki, Łukasz Owsian, Jan Tratnik and Mateusz Taciak clocked 9th fastest time at first check point, 29 seconds behind Team Sky which recorded best result there.
The “orange squad” picked up the pace later on, despite losing two riders, who went flat out early in the effort. They moved up one more spot, setting 8th fastest time at the finish line – 49:34.47, 1:44 behind world champions from Team Sunweb. CCC Sprandi Polkowice finished the race ahead of some of the top World Tour teams, such as Katusha-Alpecin, Bora-Hansgrohe, Astana or Trek Segafredo. What makes this performance impressive is also a fact, that it’s the highest place claimed by Polkowice-based team in world championships TTT.
We can be very satisfied with our result. 8th place in such a quality field of teams and small gap to the squads which finished in 5th -7th is something we can be proud of. We did a great TTT and we showed that we are not far behind the strongest teams – Piotr Wadecki explains.
The plan was to ride steady and strong pace and try to stay together as long as possible. Marcin Białobłocki pushed high gears in the flat, Mateusz Taciak led us on the climb and the entire squad performed great. The key was to ride well as a unit and that’s what we did today. We knew the course in every detail. We had covered it twice and we knew exactly every corner and roundabout. I think that we gained a lot in those technical sections.
Defending champions, BMC Racing took 2nd (8s down) and Team Sky (22s) 3rd.
