The orange squad returns to Italy to take part in another two “classics” – Memorial Marco Pantani (1.1, September 22nd) and Trofeo Matteotti (1.1, September 23rd).
As the 2018 season almost comes to an end, CCC Sprandi Polkowice will want to finish it strong with a good result in the Italian races. First up, is Memorial Marco Pantani which commemorates one of the best climbers in cycling history. The 200-kilometer course of this event is not extremely mountainous though, as it’s held in undulating terrain in Emilia-Romagna. There is one categorized climb on the menu, in Montevecchio, but it’s a special one, since it was the favorite ascent of the late Pantani. The riders will be passing his monument, which is located near the top of the slope, three times. Final 40km are all flat, so sprinters may use that stretch to get back to the field. The finish venue will located in Cesenatico, home town of Pantani, where he was also buried.
The next day Trofeo Matteotti will take place. It features 13 laps, 15km each (195km in total), which go around the city of Pescara. The profile shouldn’t scare those who don’t climb particularly well and the race will most likely end with a bunch gallop.
CCC Sprandi Polkowice have named a versatile line-up with Amaro Antunes and Paweł Cieślik, who do very well in hilly terrain and Frantisek Sisr who will be the man for the sprint in case of a field finish. Young Michał Paluta, Patryk Stosz, Kamil Małecki and Piotr Brożyna will round out the line-up and their main responsibilities will include getting into the breakaways, protect leaders throughout the race and help them position well for the finale.
