CCC Sprandi Polkowice will race in Amstel Gold Race despite stolen bikes

Despite losing 18 bikes in a burglary, CCC Sprandi Polkowice will race on Easter Sunday (April 16th) in UCI World Tour event, Amstel Gold Race

The preparation for the prestigious race has been disturbed, by burglars who broke into the team’s truck on the night between Thursday and Friday.

It happened on a guarded parking lot in front of our hotel in Valkenburg. All 18 bikes and spare wheels were stolen, despite the fact that the truck was equipped with car alarm and the door was blocked by another team car, parked right in front of it. We don’t know how the burglars managed to go around the security system – Piotr Wadecki, DS of CCC Sprandi Polkowice said. – Currently we are working on bringing training bikes to the Netherlands, so the riders can race on Sunday.

This year’s edition of AGR is 264,6km long and takes the peloton from Maastricht to Valkenburg. The course has been changed comparing to previous years, as the finish line will be at the same place, but the organizers decided to scrap the fourth and last ascent of Cauberg. They justify their decision, saying that the exclusion of the climb will open up the race, rewarding attacking riders and making the event more appealing.

For CCC Sprandi Polkowice it will be fourth consecutive time participating in the “beer race”. So far the best result has been recorded by Maciej Paterski, who earned 9th in 2015.

He will lead the 2017 team alongside Jan Tratnik. Making the finale more flat should also favor Simone Ponzi. The rest of the riders: Jonas Koch, Michał Paluta, Adrian Kurek, Frantisek Sisr and Jakub Kaczmarek will try to make orange colors visible, by getting in the breaks and protecting team leaders.

TV coverage of Amstel Gold Race starts at 14:30 (Polish time) on Eurosport 1.
