After winning city criterium, Alan Banaszek finished 3rd on stage 1 of CCC Tour – Grody Piastowskie.
Info: Stage 1, May 5th, Złotoryja – Jawor, 166km
Course: Undulating, three 1.cat climbs (Podgórki – 74,9km, Pomocne – 122 and 151km)
The stage from Złotoryja to Jawor was the first one, which results were included in the general classification. For most of it the 4-man breakaway was leading the race and CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders were rolling safely in the pack.
The bunch would stretch out in the hilly terrain, but things always came back together on the descends. The last escapee standing, Yuriy Natarov got caught on the final climb of the day, with less than 20km to go. Since it was all downhill or flat from that point, it was all decided in a bunch sprint. Alan Banaszek proved once again to be one of the fastest riders in the race, as he sprinted to 3rd place.
Filippo Fortina (Tirol Cycling Team) took the win, besting Grzegorz Stępniak (Wibatech 4r Fuji).
I was dropped on the last climb, but Kamil Małecki waited for me and helped me get back to the field with 5km remaining. It was early enough to position myself for the sprint and set the “orange train”. Also Wibatech was pacing the group in the finale, working for its leader. Unfortunately Filippo Fortina surprised us with his attack with 300m to go, on twisty streets and we had to settle for 3rd. I’m very grateful for what my teammates did for me today. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have been in a position to battle for top places – Alan Banaszek, who accepted the youth classification leader jersey on the podium, said after the stage.
