Clasica de Almeria: Kump sprints into top 10

Marko Kump recorded his first top 10 this season, taking 6th in Clasica de Almeria.

Info: February 11th,  Almeria  –  Roquetas de Mar, 185,1km

Course: First part hilly, second part flat

Before it came to the decisive sprint, 7-man breakaway (with no “riders in orange” included) had been established. Their advantage over the bunch was hovering around 3:30-4 minute mark for nearly first 3 hour of racing. In the second, mostly flat part of the race, pace in the peloton picked up drastically and the escape got reeled back in with 35km to go.

In the finale the bunch had to face some crosswinds and due to that, the pack split. CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders made sure to be in the front and kicked off final, 11-kilometer lap positioned at the head of the bunch. In the end Marko Kump could count on his teammates, as they led him out in the sprint. He finished off the team’s effort by taking 6th place.

Our team did a good job, fighting for my position at the head of the bunch on final, quite chaotic lap. With 2km to go we were leading the peloton, but then there was some misunderstanding and Jan Tratnik accelerated too much and I had to battle for position all over. That cost me some energy. In the last few hundred meters Kamil Gradek helped me get back in the race. I was lacking some power in the sprint, but it was one of the first bunch finishes for me this season. I’m sure that with such an amazing team, power will come also.

Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott) sprinted to victory, besting Danny van Poppel (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) and Timothy Dupont (Wanty – Groupe Gobert).
