Paweł Franczak kicked off his first season in orange colors with 7th place on the opening stage of Colombia Oro y Paz.
Info: Stage 1, February 6th, Palmira – Palmira, 99,9km
Course: flat (9 laps, 11,1km each)
The first stage of 6-day race saw 5-man breakaway being formed early on. Duo to short distance, just 100km, the peloton didn’t allow them to create too much space and kept things under control. CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders, who arrived in Colombia just 4 days prior the event, took the opening stage easy, still adjusting to conditions of South America. For the entire squad it was also debut in 2018 season, so they’ve been still trying to find race pace and spent the day in the peloton.
They picked up the tempo on the final lap, where the breakaway got caught, to hustle for position for Paweł Franczak. Paweł Bernas was his last lead-out man and delivered him to the front of the pack. They put up a good fight in the finale, but were unable to thwart Quick Step’s train. At the end of the day Franczak sprinted to solid, 7th place.
Fernando Gaviria finished off work of his teammates, taking the win ahead of Juan Sebastian Molano (Manzana Postobon) and Ariel Maximiliano Richeze (Quick-Step Floors).
