Coppa Agostoni – race to forget

Coppa Agostoni is the race to forget, as the entire „orange squad” didn’t reach the finish.  Gianni Moscon took the win in this Italian event.

Info: September 15th, Lissone – Lissone, 199,9km

Course: undulating

CCC Sprandi Polkowice were quite aggressive early on, and Piotr Brożyna, who is returning to competition after his serious back injury, was one of the attackers. His move didn’t stick though and eventually “riders in orange” didn’t make the 8-man breakaway that pulled away and created a daylight.

They were given lots of space, as with 50km into the race the gap was up to over 7 minutes. When the race entered undulating laps, both the bunch and escape broke into pieces. With 58km to go Damiano Caruso and Gianni Moscon launched their attack, overtaking all escapees, but one, Angel Madrazo, who joined two Italians in their journey towards the line.

Peloton, which already was reduced to around 80 riders  – among them were still Paweł Cieślik and Amaro Antunes – got shattered there even more. 11-man chasing group was established, but this time CCC Sprandi Polowice were not part of the mix.

Inside final 20km Rein Taaramäe bridged to the trio and with 6km to go only Moscon was able to keep up with him. They arrived across the line together and Team Sky rider took the win.

It was a very hard day for the Polkowice-based squad, since none of the riders completed the race. Paweł Cieślik, who at the moment of key attacks was among those who tried to mark them, punctured afterwards and couldn’t get back to the pack.
