Jaroslaw Marycz got into the breakaway of the day at the GP Banca di Legnano – Coppa Bernocchi and eventually finished in 21st place. Elia Viviani (Cannondale) claimed the win.
Coppa Bernocchi is the first race of Trittico Lombardia. It’s also one of the oldest cycling events in Italy, since this year it was the 96th edition. The start and finish was placed in the same town of Legnano. That was the beginning and the end of the 16-kilometer, hilly lap, with one climb in Morazzone. The riders had to covered it 7 times (in total 190km).
The greatest cyclists took part in the Italian race, such as Ivan Basso, Peter Sagan or Tour de France winner, Vincenzo Nibali. CCC Polsat Polkowice was represented by Davide Rebellin, Bartlomiej Matysiak, Jaroslaw Marycz, Nikolay Mihaylov, Maciej Paterski, Marek Rutkiewicz, Branislau Samoilau and Mateusz Taciak.
After very lively first 50 kilometers finally the breakaway of the day was established. One of the escapees was Jaroslaw Marycz – Many riders tried to break clear and it took a while to form the leading group – he said afterwards. – Three riders attacked at the beginning – Caleb Ewan (Australia), Juan Pablo Valencja (Kolumbia) and Kenny De Ketele (Topsport Vlaanderen – Baloise). Soon after I counter attacked and tried to bridge the gap. I joined Belgian, who’d fallen back from the Australian-Colombian duo and together we managed to get to the front of the race.
We gained around 6-minute advantage and we were not reeled in until the last lap. This is when I had some small technical difficulties and I got dropped from the break. Few minutes later we got caught by the 20-man group with the favorites – Nibali, Sagan, Viviani, Ponzi and Pozzato. I was able to maintain their pace and I arrived to the finish with them.
In the final part of the race the series of attacks occurred but no one’s acceleration was strong enough to leave everyone behind. It came down to a 20-man group sprint. Elia Viviani proved to be the best sprinter in that field and took the win. He outsprinted Filippo Pozzato (Lampre-Merida) and Simone Ponzi (Neri Sottoli).
Marycz crossed the line in 21th place, 6 seconds behind the winner.
