The 1st stage of the 53rd Dookoła Mazowsza race was won by Sebastian Forke (Team Nutrixxion – Sparkasse). In a sprinters’ duel he overtook Henning Bommel (LKT-Team Brandenburg) and Rudiger Selig (Jenatec Cycling). The best of the Poles, Bartłomiej Matysiak from CCC Polsat Polkowice finished in the fourth place.
Within the 180 kilometres long route of stage 1 of the race from Siedlce to Kozienice, the organizers have marked three intermediate sprints and three climbs, situated on little hills along the route which is – nothing unusual in Mazovia – mostly flat. In the final part of the stage there will be two laps around Kozienice, 20 kilometres each.
From the very beginning of the race in Siedlce there have been numerous attempts to break away from the peloton. At about 40 kilometres one of such break-away groups succeeded in leaving the peloton: Tomasz Lisowicz (CCC Polsat Polkowice) and Andzs Flaksis (Team Rietumu-Delf). The ‘escapees’ successively increased their advantage over the peloton, winning on their way the intermediate sprints and climbs, and their advantage at one moment amounted to over 6 minutes. Tomasz Lisowicz won all 3 intermediate sprints, while an Estonian cyclist became the winner of all the climbs and thus he wore the jersey of the mountains classification leader. When the two escaping cyclists approached the laps in Kozienice a joint chase started in the peloton on the part of cyclists from Mróz ActivJet together with the cyclists of the German teams: Nutrixxion, Jenatec and LKT Brandenburg. Right before riding into the laps in Kozienice Tomek Lisowicz was caught up with, while the other of the break-away cyclists was reached by the peloton in the first lap. At that moment it was clear, that the finish of stage 1 will be decided in the peloton. In the fight for the stage win the cyclists from German teams turned out to be impossible to defeat. The victory was achieved by Sebastian Forke from Team Nutrixxion – Sparkasse. The second cyclist at the finishing line in Kozienice was Henning Bommel (LKT-Team Brandenburg), and the third place was won by Rudiger Selig (Jenatec Cycling). In the fourth position there was Bartłomiej Matysiak (CCC Polsat Polkowice), who on 1 August will start as a contestant in the national team of Poland in the 67th Tour de Pologne.
In the general classification after stage on the German Forke is leading, with 1 second of advantage over Tomasz Lisowicz (CCC Polsat Polkowice), who thanks to winning three intermediate sprints and being awarded with 9 seconds of time bonus is holding the position of vice-leader of the race.
