Kamil Gradek finished 14th in rainy and cobbled Belgian race, Dwars door West-Vlaanderen, also called Johan Museeuw Classics.
Info: March 4th, Nieuwpoort – Ichtegem, 189,3km
Trasa: undulating, punchy bergs, cobblestone sections
As expected, Belgium was not too welcoming in terms of the weather and racing conditions. With just 8 degrees, rain, wind and tough, cobbled course on the menu, it was certain that it won’t be an easy day in the saddle.
4 attackers were able to go clear early in the race, and later gained nearly 6 minutes on the peloton. CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders were not part of that move.
Escapees got caught and overtaken with around 52km remaining, by a strong 3-man group who had pulled away from the bunch – Remi Cavagna, Florian Senechal (both Quick Step Floors) and Frederik Frison (Lotto Soudal).
Meanwhile in the peloton, which was being reduced with every kilometer, Jonas Koch and Marko Kump were involved in crashes. They didn’t suffer any serious injuries, but got banged up in and had to abandon from competition. Other CCC Sprandi Polkowice duo, Kamil Gradek and Paweł Bernas were going strong in the main group.
The leading trio held on and in the end Quick Step Floors could play their cards. Cavagna attacked, while Senechal let Frison do all the chasing. Their plan worked, Cavagna took the win, his teammate was 2nd and Lotto-Soudal rider got third.
With 4km to go Bernas was trying to shake things up in the chasing bunch, but his attempt was unsuccessful. Eventually it was Gradek, who was the team’s top finisher, coming in in 14th place.
