Stage 1 of Bałtyk – Karkonosze Tour finished successfully for the escapees, but Paweł Franczak showcased his power in the sprint, as he was the fastest from the bunch.
Info: May 16th, Kołobrzeg – Trzcianka, 174,8km
Most of the stage was held with a tailwind, so the average speed was extremely high. In the first hour of racing the riders covered 49 kilometers and this was also when the 4-man breakaway was established. Later on they opened up a 4-minute lead.
The teams in the peloton couldn’t come to an agreement on who and when should start chasing. Escapees took full advantage of their hesitation and managed to hold on. Fabian Schormair (Team Lotto – Kern Haus) was the fastest in the sprint taking the win in the opener and the overall lead. Anton Kuzmin (Astana City) finished second.
Peloton came in around 15 seconds behind and Paweł Franczak was the most explosive from the field, claiming 5th place at the line.
