Garmin Velothon Berlin: 24th place for Stępniak

Grzegorz Stępniak was 24th in a bunch sprint, in the Garmin Velothon Berlin (1.1). The race was won by Ramon Sinkeldam.

174-kilometer event featured a four-man breakaway of the day. It included Jonas Rickaert (Topsport Vlaanderen – Baloise), Max Walsleben (Team Stuttgart), Benjamin Edmüller (Team Heizomat) and Marco Mathis (Rad-Net Rose Team). They established over 5-minute lead which was being steadily reduced by the accelerating peloton in the second part of racing.

The escape was reduced to three riders, because of a puncture of Mathis. The trio was caught with 10 kilometers to go. At that point CCC Sprandi Polkowice were riding close to the front of the bunch, setting up Grzegorz Stępniak for the final sprint.

As expected it came down to a battle of the sprinters. Ramon Sinkeldam (Giant-Alpecin) was the fastest and defeated Sam Bennett (Bora-Argon 18). Winner’s lead-out man Zico Waeytens claimed third. Grzegorz Stepniak was the top finisher and took 24th.
