Get to know Felix Großschartner

Just like most of the Austrians, Felix Großschartner loves mountains. His first sport was skiing, but when he tasted a little bit of cycling, he fell in love with it right away.

What’s your hobby outside of cycling?

I like ski touring. I haven’t done it too much this winter, but in the previous years it was part of my preparation for the season. I like to spend time alone in the nature, in the snowy mountains, when it’s very quiet and relaxing. I also like mountain climbing and MTB cycling. Basically I enjoy everything that involves mountains.

Describe your hometown

It’s Marchtrenk – in the north of Austria. It’s only one hour drive from the mountains. It’s a small town and everybody knows each other. I was racing for 6 years for the Austrian team, which headquarter was only 5 kilometers away from my town. Some good cyclists come from that region, for example Riccardo Zoidl from Trek- Segafredo.

How was your beginnings in cycling

I went to ski school. One day I broke my leg and my rehabilitation was based on bike and ergometer.  The coach of the cycling club from my home town asked me if I want to go on a training camp. Two days before the camp I took off the cast and I went. My doctor was not even aware of that. I fell in love with road cycling right away.

Your idol?

I respect Alberto Contador a lot. When I was a trainee at Tinkoff-Saxo I really learnt a lot from Roman Kreuziger. He is a hard worker and real professional.

What do you listen to when you warm up before the time trial?

Hip hop – Austrian and American. I also like hard rock, “Harley Davidson music”.

Favorite race?

Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Giro d’Italia. From those in which I’ve had the chance to compete myself – U23 race Trofeo Piva and Tour of Austria.

Best day on a bike in your career, when everything went perfectly?

Last year, when I won the stage 2 of Giro della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia. I pulled away from a small group and held on to take the win. It was a hard stage with cat. 2 Passo Duron climb, located only 18 kilometers from the finish.

Favorite movie?

The Equalizer with Denzel Washington

Other sports you are interested in?

Skiing – favorite skier Marcel Hirscher – and basketball – favorite player Amar’é Stoudemire

What are your mechanical bike skills

I can only fix some basic things in my bike. I wouldn’t be able to put together the entire bike or fully prepare it for the race.
