For Josef Cerny, season 2015 will be the third one in the Polkowice-based team. He is only 21 years old and has already been wearing the leader jersey in Giro del Trentino.
Cerny lives in Ostrawa, which is just 20 kilometers from the Polish-Czech boarder. This is where he spent most of his life, although he was born in the nearby town of Frýdek-Místek. He picked up cycling when he was 10 years old and started with a MTB bike. Just like couple of other CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders, he also used to play hockey – When I was 5 my father introduced me to hockey. He was a coach in the local team. I played it for few years and when cycling entered my life I decided to do both for some time. Eventually I chose bike, because it turned out I’m pretty good at it – Josef Cerny, for whom Lance Armstrong was a cycling idol, explains.
When he’s not riding he likes to cook. Before the race he usually eats eggs and rice with olive oil. After the effort he likes sweet rice and oatmeal. His favorite snack are chocolate bars such as Mars or Goralki.
After entering U23 category he signed with Polish team Wibatech – LMGK Ziemia Brzeska. He joined there Leszek Pluciński, current teammate from CCC Sprandi Polkowice. Being just 19 years old he won mountains classification in Carpathian Couriers Race, was 2nd in the youth classification both in Małopolska Tour and Mazovia Tour. In 2013 Cerny moved to Piotr Wadecki’s squad – Great opportunities have occurred for me in that moment. Suddenly I had a chance to compete in the prestigious European races. It was not easy to adjust to professional cyclist’s life, but it was very exciting time. Of course my greatest memory from that season was wearing the leader’s jersey in Giro del Trentino. It was amazing and if I had to describe that day in one world it would be “euphoria” – he says.
The lead in the Italian event was not the only success he accomplished that year. He took the national title in the individual time trial in U23 category (he beat Petr Vakoc, who now races for Etixx-Quick Step), won the youth classification in Mazovia Tour and finished again 2nd among espoirs in Malopolska Tour.
Next season he added to his palmeras victory in Visegrad 4 Bicycle Race – GP Czech Republic and 2nd place in the mountain classification in Course de la Paix U23.
My goal for 2015 is to stay healthy, continue my development as a rider and claim some wins. The most important races are the world championship, Czech championship, Course de la Paix U23 and Czech Cycling Tour.
The youngster wants to perform well especially in front of his compatriots. In the previous years he was the only Czech on the team. Now he can spend some more time with his fellow-countryman, Jan Hirt, who has joined the squad in the off-season.
