Giovanni Visconti soloed to victory in Italian one-day event Giro dell’Emilia (1.HC).

How it unfolded
First of the final two Italian one-day races of 2017 season, saw 9-man breakaway. Initially 7 riders broke clear – Adrien Niyonshuti (Team Dimension Data), Davide Ballerini (Androni Sidermec), Redi Halilaj (Amore e Vita Selle SMP), Francois Bidard (Ag2r La Mondiale), Nicolas Edet (Cofidis Solutions Credits), Fabien Doubey (Wanty – Groupe Gobert), Jacopo Mosca (Wilier Triestina – Selle Italia), but later they were joined by Lorenzo Rota (Bardiani – Csf) and Nicola Bagioli (Nippo-Vini Fantini).
The biggest gap of the day was set at 7:20, early in the race.
Niyonshuti was first one to get dropped, while Mosca, Eded i Doubey were the last ones to get caught, when they were overtaken by Francesco Manuel Bongiono (Sangemini – MG.Kvis ) and Edoardo Zardini (Bardiani – CSF), who counterattacked with 20km to go.
That duo didn’t stay up front for too long though, as they were reeled back in by shattered to 40 riders bunch, led by Bahrain-Merida. CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders were unable to survive the selection carried out on demanding lap, although Leszek Pluciński tried something on the first circuit.
On the penultimate lap, Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain-Merida) pulled away, gaining 30s lead. He held on until the finish taking a solo win. His teammate Vincenzo Nibali was 2nd and Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac) 3rd.
Jakub Kaczmarek was the team’s top finisher, coming in 71st.
