Maciej Paterski took 14th place in the sprint battle on stage 12 of Giro d’Italia.
Info: Stage 12, May 18th, Forlì – Reggio Emilia, 229km
Course: mostly flat (one cat. 2 and one cat. 3)
How it unfolded
Sergey Firsanov (Gazprom-RusVelo), Marco Marcato (UAE Team Emirates) and Mirco Maestri (Bardiani-CSF) checked in in the breakaway of the day, on the longest stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia. Despite such a long distance – 229 kilometers – the peloton didn’t give them too much rope, keeping the gap under 6 minutes.
The peloton started to accelerate with around 40km to go and caught first two escapees – Firsanov and Marcato with 10km remaining. Few minutes later also Maestri was back in the group.
The stage ended as expected, with a bunch sprint. CCC Sprandi Polkowice led out Maciej Paterski who sprinted to 14th place. Fernando Gaviria (Quick Step Floors) claimed the win, beating Jakub Mareczko (Wilier Triestina – Selle Italia) and Sam Bennett (Bora – Hansgrohe).
Jan Hirt moved up another spot in the GC, to 21st overall, while Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) defended his pink jersey.
