CCC Sprandi Polkowice set 15th fastest time on the first stage of Giro d’Italia, which was a team time trial. Orica GreenEDGE claimed the victory.
The „orange squad” kicked off the Italian Grand Tour with Maciej Paterski, Grega Bole, Sylwester Szmyd, Branislau Samoilau, Nikolay Mihaylov, Bartłomiej Matysiak, Marek Rutkiewicz, Jarosław Marycz and Łukasz Owsian in the lineup. They rolled off of the start ramp in San Lorenzo Mare at 16:20. The team arrived at the finish in Sanremo after 20 minutes and 11 seconds, covering 17,6km route, which ran on the bike path. They averaged 53,320 km/h and at the time that was the 9th best result.
Time trial specialists – Nikolay Mihaylov and Jarosław Marycz went flat out in the first part of the race. They gave it all and lost few seconds to their teammates later on.
Eventually CCC Sprandi Polkowice was ranked in 15th place, 45 seconds behind the stage winners from Orica GreenEDGE. Tinkoff-Saxo and Astana took 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Second stage of Giro d’Italia from Albenga to Girona is 177km long and the profile should fit the sprinters. Bunch sprint is expected.
