Nikolay Mihaylov was the fastest CCC Sprandi Polkowice rider on a rainy time trial, Stage 14 of Giro d’Italia. He set 21st fastest time, beating few GC contenders and time trial specialists. Vasil Kiryienka was the strongest and took the win.
Nikolay Mihaylov was the first „rider in orange” to roll off the starting ramp. The Bulgarian was the fastest on the first time check. He also recorded the best time at the finish – 1:20:32 – and was placed in the hot seat. Later he was bested by Luke Durbridge, but maintained top 10 result for over an hour. When the last rider, GC leader, Fabio Aru, crossed the line, 21st place popped up by Mihaylov’s name. He lost 2:40 to the stage winner, Vasil Kiryienka (Team Sky).
Despite the harmless crash, Marek Rutkiewicz was the second fastest CCC Sprandi Polkowice timetrialist of the day. He finished in 48th, 4:09 back.
Alberto Contador, who took 3rd, regained the pink jersey.
