On a completely flat, Stage 13 of Giro d’Italia, two CCC Sprandi Polkowice finished in the Top 25. The chaotic sprint, caused by a crash before 3km mark, was won by Sacha Modolo.
It was another rainy day at the Giro d’Italia. It kicked off with many attacks. With 10 kilometers into the stage the three man group – with Marco Frapporti (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec), Rick Zabel (BMC Racing), Jerome Pineau (IAM) – broke clear. The peloton was making sure to keep the gap under 2 minutes to bring the race to a bunch sprint.
The leading group was caught with 17km to go. There were no other attacks later on, as the sprinters’ teams were setting high pace. On the final kilometers there was a crash in the middle of the bunch. It caused the group to split and stretched out significantly. Few GC contenders were involved in the accident and lost valuable seconds in the overall standings. CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders were lucky enough to not fall down.
In the finale, Maciej Paterski and Bartłomiej Matysiak were close to the best sprinters and managed to claimed places in the top 25 – in 20th and 24th respectively. Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) finished off his teammates’ lead-out and grabbed the win. He outsprinted Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek Factory Racing) and Elia Viviani (Team Sky).
Due to the time loses, caused by a crash, Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) lost the maglia rosa and Fabio Aru (Astana) became new leader of the race.
