Grody: 3 stage for Thomel, Rutkiewicz still the leader.

The rider of NSP-Ghost Team, Timo Thomel, became the winner of the 3rd stage of the Szlakiem Grodów Piastowskich race. In a sprint finish he defeated Adam Wadecki (BDC MarcPol) and Andreo Palini (Team Idea). Marek Rutkiewicz (CCC Polsat Polkowice) is still the leader of the race.

During the afternoon stage, the riders had a slightly hilly route of the total length of about 80 kilometres to ride, leading along the roads around Polkowice. The riders made a circuit of the town three times fighting for points of the mountains classification at the climb of the 2nd category in Gradowiec. The riders fought also for bonus seconds at the only intermediate stage, situated in the Polkowice Market Square. The third stage is the only one where sprint riders could try their chance.

After the morning time trial held in beautiful, sunny weather, the stage in the afternoon was held in much unfavourable weather conditions. Right after the peloton’s start, storm clouds gathered above Polkowice, a terrible downpour started, accompanied by hail. It got very cold, the temperature rapidly dropped to 15 degrees Celsius.

One of the first actions was a breakaway of Vojtech Hacecky, a rider of the Dukla Prague team. In the downpour, the attacking on his own rider managed to gain a dozen or so seconds over the peloton, in which the control was all the time in the hands of the CCC Polsat Polkowice team. The Czech rider’s breakaway did not threaten the leaders’s position, so nobody dared to eliminate the breakaway. The escaping Hacecky was still increasing the lead, on his way winning points at the climb. He also won the only intermediate stage in Polkowice, where the second to come was Dariusz Rudnicki (BDC MarcPol), and the third one was Tomasz Kiendyś (CCC Polsat Polkowice).

When there were not many kilometres left before the finishing line the peloton imposed quite a strong pace and it was clear that the whole peloton will arrive at the finishing line in Polkowice, and sprint riders will fight for the victory. 4 kilometres before the finishing line the peloton was already riding together and sprint riders were setting themselves for the fight for victory.

At the finishing line in the Polkowice Market Square the best one in the sprinters’ duel was Timo Thomel, who defeated Adam Wadecki and Andreo Palini.

The outcome of the 3rd stage did not change the general classification of the race. Marek Rutkiewicz is still the leader,

Tomorrow the riders are facing the last, fourth stage of the race, from Dzierżoniów to Świdnica.
