Grody: Marek Rutkiewicz – vice-leader of the race.

The rider of Adria Mobil, Marko Kump, became the winner of the 1st stage of the Szlakiem Grodów Piastowskich race. In the finish in Złotoryja he overtook Marek Rutkiewicz (CCC Polsat Polkowice) and Luca Dodi, who rode most of the race in a break-away.

The first stage of the race of Szlakiem Grodów Piastowskich led from Jawor to Złtoryja, and its distance was almost 162 kilometres. It was not an easy stage, because along the stage there were four climbs of the 1st category, and each rider who has taken part in Grody knows what an uphill stretch at Kapela means, followed by Podgórki three times.

Right after the start of the peloton in Jawor, at 8 kilometres of the route, there was the only intermediate stage in this stage. It was won by Thomel from Team NSP, and Grzegorz Stępniak (CCC Polsat Polkowice) finished in the third position. When the riders started going up Chełmiec the first attacks from peloton started. In one of them there were two riders: Luca Dodi (Adria Mobil) and Rene Hooghiemster (NSP-Ghost). The peloton, not to eager to eliminate the break-away, gave up on the riders, who quite soon gained advantage over the peloton. At the first climb at Kapela, won by Hooghiemster, the escaping twosome were already a lead of almost 6 minutes. The lead was still growing, and when the riders were negotiating the uphill stretch in Podgórki for the second time it reached 9.16 minutes. In the peloton there was no decision made which team should take the burden of the chase after the break-away riders. Only in the last uphill stretch in Podgórki, where the riders of Adria Mobil, supported by CCC Polsat Polkowice, got down to hard work, the lead started to decrease. The strong pace made the peloton divide into smaller groups. About 5 minutes behind the escaping twosome were followed by a group of 25 ricers. Because less than 40 kilometres was left before the finishing line in Złotoryja, and the route led along downhill stretches, the peloton, pressing the pedals harder, started to get closer the escaping twosome.

Dariusz Batek ‘brings’ the peloton to their next climb in Podgórki.

In the final kilometres, along the streets of Złotoryja already, still alone the Italian Luca Dodi, was heading for the finishing line, having left the German Hooghiemster behind earlier, and it seemed that he would become the winner of the stage. Unfortunately, the rushing chase group managed to catch up with him right before the finishing line. In the final metres Marco Kump attacked, and it was he who became the stage winner. The Italian was also overtaken by Marek Rutkiewicz, who crossed the finishing line in the second position. Luca Dodi took the third place.
