Adrian Honkisz claimed his first victory of the season, by winning Puchar Uzdrowiski Karpackich (UCI 1.2). He was joined on the podium also by his teammate, Łukasz Owsian.
Before that duo made their decisive move, Bartłomiej Matysiak did his work in the breakaway. After yesterday’s 13th place in Memoriał Henryka Łasaka, this time CCC Sprandi Polkowice rider tried his chances in the escape. It was formed after very lively 60 kilometers of racing, when him, Paweł Charucki (Domin Sport) and Tomas Buchacek (Whirlpool Author) joined Sergey Nikolaev (Itera – Katusha), who attacked a bit earlier.
They established a 3:30 lead, but the peloton reduced the gap to only 20 seconds with 35 kilometers to go. 10 kilometers later the escapees were back in the field. Other riders tried to pull away late and strong acceleration split the group. 24-man bunch emerged in the front and among them was Adrian Honkisz. He took off on the penultimate hill and quickly built up a 15-second advantage. He held off the peloton and could raise his arms in triumph.
Roman Maikin (RusVelo) finished 2nd, and other CCC Sprandi Polkowice runner, Łukasz Owsian took 3rd.
Our plan was to get into the break. Basically everyone on the team tried to go clear, but it was Bartłomiej Matysiak who managed to find his way to the escape. Thanks to that, we could go easy in the peloton and save energy for the last kilometers. – Adrian Honkisz explains. – The finale consisted of three laps with one hill. When we entered the circuit, the leading group consisted of more then 20 riders, and 4 of them were from our team. We were attacking one after another. Eventually I was able to create a gap on the penultimate lap and maintain my lead all the way to the finish.
I have won this race also two years ago, but back than it was held on a slightly different course. Now it’s little bit harder, which suits me even more. I am really happy with this victory, since it’s a first one for me of the season. In was always lacking something in this’s years races, sometimes it was just luck. Now I can finally breathe a sigh of relief since everything went well and I got my first win of 2015.
