Honkisz’s bronze in the Mountains Championship of Poland, the U-23 category

Paweł Poljański representing the club of Kellys Cartusia Kartuzy won the joint race of the elite and U-23 categories during the road cycling Mountains Championship of Poland held in Sosnówka. The medals in categories were awarded separately. In the elite gold was won by Marek Rutkiewicz (Mróz Active Jet), ahead of his team-mate Paweł Cieślik and Radosław Romaniki (DHL Author). In the U-23 category on the podium, next to Paweł Poljański stood the following: Piotr Gawroński (Pacific Toruń) and Adrian Honkisz (CCC Polsat Polkowice).

In the race, that closes the competitions of Mountains Championship of Poland, at the start there were young riders and cyclists of the elite category. After the first few laps a group of 10 cyclists formed: Marek Rutkiewicz, Paweł Cieślik (Mróz Active Jet), Tomasz Marczyński and Adrian Honkisz (CCC Polsat Polkowice), Paweł Poljański (Kellys Cartusia Kartuzy), Radosław Romanik (DHL Author), Rafał Majka (WLKS Krakus BBC Kraków), Mariusz Gil (LKS POM Strzelce Krajeńskie), Dariusz Baranowski (Weltour Romet Dębica) as well as Piotr Gawroński (Pacific MG Kvis Toruń). Attempts to join the leading group were made, among others, by Marcin Urbanowski (DHL Author), Paweł Charucki (Pacific MG Kvis Toruń) and Adrian Brzózka (JBG2), often seen at the front of the group.

Rafał Majka dropped out of the lead first. Three laps before the end Paweł Poljański, Marek Rutkiewicz, Adrian Honkisz and Radosław Romanik attacked from the group. Behind them there were: Tomasz Marczyński, Paweł Cieślik, Piotr Gawroński and Mariusz Gil. Dariusz Baranowski stayed a bit behind.

Paweł Poljański attacked on his own approaching the penultimate lap. The cyclist of Cartusia Kartuzy gained several dozens of advantage over the cyclists of Mróz: Marek Rutkiewicz, later joined by Paweł Cieślik. In the next group there were cyclists of the CCC Polsat Polkowice group Adrian Honkisz and Tomasz Marczyński, as well as Radosław Romanik.

Such a situation lasted until the end of the race. Paweł Poljański crossed the finishing line as first. He became the Mountains Champion of Poland in the U-23 category. According to the regulations, unlike in women’s competitions, separate classifications were created for both races.

Behind Paweł Poljański’s back, creating an image similar to the one in Kielce, holding together their hands up, cyclists of the elite – Marek Rutkiewicz and Paweł Cieślik – crossed the finishing line, winning the gold and silver medal. Radosław Romanik won his second consecutive medal of Mountains Championship of Poland, this time a bronze one. Among the U-23 cyclists on the podium stood Piotr Gawroński (Pacific MG Kvis Toruń) and Adrian Honkisz (CCC Polsat Polkowice), active during the whole race.
