Bartłomiej Matysiak made the top 15 on stage 1 of Istrian Spring Trophy. The stage ended with a 5-kilometer ascent and Sergey Nikolaev was the first one to reach the finish.
Today a 9-man group broke away and gained around 3 minutes of advantage. Behind them, many riders counterattacked from the field and among those who tried to jump over was Patryk Stosz. Eventually all of the escapees got caught before the bottom of the last ascent which led all the way to the finish – sport director, Tomasz Brożyna said.
The final hill lined up the bunch and the group broke to few pieces. In the decisive kilometer there was a cobblestone section and in such terrain Bartłomiej Matysiak managed to finish in 15th place (16 seconds behind the winner). Other riders from the Polkowice-based team lost 29 seconds. The stage was won by Sergey Nikolaev (Itera – Katusha). Markus Eibegger (Synergy Baku Cycling Project) came in 2nd and Michael Gogl (Team Felbermayr – Simplon Wels) in 3rd.
Matysiak sits in 14th overall, 33 seconds back on the leader, Nikolaev.
The Saturday’s stage from Vrsar to Motovun has similar profile to today’s stage. It will also be hilly, there will be around 160km to cover and the race will end with an uphill finish.
