The winner of stage 2 of Giro del Trentino is a cyclist of the Europcar team, Thomas Voeckler. He was quicker at the finishing line than his companion from the break-away Michele Scarponi (Lampre ISD) and Przemysław Niemiec (Lampre ISD), who brought the peloton.
Stage 2 of the race led from Dro to Ledro Bezzecca in a very hilly area, and its total length was 184 kilometres. Right after the start six cyclists attacked out of the peloton, and they managed to gain advantage relatively quickly. In the break-away group there were: Yuriy Krivstov (AG2R La Mondiale), Giuseppe de Maria (De Rosa–Ceramica Flaminia), Volodymyr Zagorodny (Miche) and Davide Torosantucci (D’Angelo & Antenucci). The escapees co-operating harmoniously gained an advantage over the peloton and despite the chase of the cyclists of the leader’s team– Team RadioShack, and Lampre-ISD they still rode together. At nearly 20 kilometres from the finishing line the break-away was eliminated. In the peloton there were still attempts to attack and only 7 kilometres before the finishing line Thomas Voeckler attacked hard, joined only by Michele Scarponi. Those two co-operated harmoniously and despite the fast pace of the peloton the escapees managed to reach the finishing line alone, gaining 25 seconds of advantage over the peloton.
In the final metres Thomas Voeckler turned out to be better and it was him who became the winner of stage 2. Michel Scarponi took the second place, and the advantage obtained allowed him to become a new leader of the race. The group who were chasing the two break-away cyclists was brought to the finishing line by Przemek Niemiec who thus took the 3rd place. In the group there were, among others, Sylwester Szmyd (Liqugas-Cannondale) taking the 19th place, and Jose Mendes (CCC Polsat Polkowice), who took the 26th place.
During the stage Dariusz Batek fell down in a crash (CCC Polsat Polkowice), he managed to reach the finishing line, though.
Michele Scarponi became the leader of the race, and he has an advantage of 12 seconds over Tiago Machado (RadioShack) and 14 over Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale). The highest classified cyclist of CCC Polsat Polkowice is Jose Mendes, holding the 26th place.
