Kaczmarek as the top finisher on the opening stage of Tour of Norway

Jakub Kaczmarek was CCC Sprandi Polkowice top finisher on stage 1 of Tour of Norway, taking 32nd place at the line.

Info: Stage 1, May 17th, Hønefoss – Asker, 169.4km

Course: undulating

How it unfolded

After multiple breakaway attempts three riders were able to go clear – Juan Pablo Villegas (Manzana Postobon), Marius Blålid (Team and Ludvik Holstad (Team Sparebanken Sør). They built up 8-minute lead, but halfway through the stage the escape started to fall apart. First Holstad got dropped and later Villegas attacked solo, with around 65km to go.

Portuguese rider was trying to outpace the peloton by himself, but he had no chance against the fierce chasers. He got caught with 25km to go, just after entering the final laps in Asker.

The circuits saw many late attacks, but none of them was successful. Strong pace prevented anyone from going away and stretched the field. The uphill, punchy finale broke the group into few pieces and the winner came from 50-man pack. The fastest from that reduced bunch was Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data), who outsprinted Tosh van der Sande (Lotto Soudal) and Simon Gerrans (ORICA-Scott). Four „Riders in orange” finished in the top 50 – Jakub Kaczmarek, Michał Paluta, Patryk Stosz, Adrian Kurek, who took 32nd, 37th, 40th and 42nd place respectively.
