Jonas Koch finished 9th on the opening stage of Tour des Fjords (2.1)
Info: Stage 1, May 24th, Balestrand – Forde, 189,9 km
Weather: Chilly, rainy
Course: undulating (two categorized climbs)
In the hilly terrain which opened up the stage, 12 riders managed to go clear. “Riders in orange” didn’t make it into that group, but the move didn’t last too long and around 80-man peloton was formed after 50 kilometers of racing.
Another breakaway included Ole Forfang (Team Joker Icopal), Saez (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA), Daniel Turek (Israel Cycling Academy), Dries Van Gestel (Sport Vlaanderen – Baloise) and Torkil Veyhe (ColoQuick CULT). They established almost 7-minute lead and as it turned out it was the winning attack.
Peloton started the chase too late and came in 26 seconds short. In a 4-man sprint (Forfang got dropped with 8km to go) Van Gestel took the win, beating Turek and Saez. Jonas Koch was one of the fastest from the bunch, claiming 9th place.
Thanks to bonus seconds taken at intermediate sprints Turek became first GC leader of the race. Koch sits in 10th.
