Jonas Koch sprinted to 12th place in German one-day event, Sparkassen Münsterland Giro (1.HC).
Info: 3rd of October, Wadersloh – Munster, 198,7km
How it unfolded
The breakaway of the day was formed early in the race and 4 riders were involved in that action – Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin), Carl Soballa (LKT-Team Brandenburg), Luca Henn (Lotto-Kern Haus) and Etienne van Empel (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij). They established nearly 5-minute lead before peloton picked up the pace and started the chase.
With 40km to go, when the gap was down to less than a minute, Soballa and Martin launched an attack from the escape. They worked well together, but couldn’t outpace the bunch, led by World Tour squads. They got caught while entering final 20km of racing, just before the finishing circuits in Munster.
Due to furious pace the bunch stretched out in the finale and in the end it was all about the sprinters. It was a very tight finish and the jury had to look at the photo finish to determine, who was first across the line. Eventually Sam Bennett (BORA – hansgrohe) was announced as the winner of Sparkassen Münsterland Giro. Phil Bauhaus (Team Sunweb) and Andre Greipela (Lotto-Soudal) finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Jonas Koch was the fastest rider of CCC Sprandi Polkowice, taking 12th place.
There is only one race left in CCC Sprandi Polkowice program for 2017 season – Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey, which is included in the UCI World Tour (10th-16th of October).
