The rider of the CCC Polsat Polkowice, Marek Rutkiewicz, became the winner of ‘Ślężański Mnich’, the race that officially begins the cycling season of 2012 in Poland. At the finishing line in Sobótka he defeated Robert Radosz (BDC) and his team-mate Dariusz Batek.
156 riders representing all professional teams, as well as amateur clubs stood to the competition in the race that started the cycling season in Poland. Almost in complete line-ups the teams of CCC Polsat Polkowice, BGŻ Team and BDC MarcPol entered the race. The riders had a distance of the total length of 120 km to ride (10 rounds each 12 kilometres long), leading as usual, along the roads around Sobótka. As yesterday the weather did not pamper the riders. There was a very strong, gusty wind, the temperature was relatively low and the only sometimes appearing sun showed that spring had already started.
Racing in the quite numerous peloton started very peacefully. During the first two rounds the cyclists rode with some reserve and any attempts to break away got eliminated at once. Only in the fourth round quite a big break away took place, in which there were: Łukasz Bodnar (BGŻ), Wręga Wojciech (Mostostal), Marek Rutkiewicz (CCC Polsat Polkowice) and Damian Walczak (BDC). The break-away gained lead over the peloton oscillating around 40 seconds. Unfortunately, the break away did not last long, and the working hard peloton eliminated it.
From the fifth lap each new round brought changes in the peloton. Different groups of formed, and the ‘orange’ riders played the main part in it, participating in each break away. Marek Rutkiewicz rode very actively, present in each action.
The decisive action for the result of the race took place in the seventh round, when the tireless Marek Rutkiewicz attacked out of the much fragmented peloton, joined by Dariusz Batek and Robert Radosz z BDC. The three riders quite soon gained advantage over the peloton and cooperating harmoniously rode towards the finishing line of the race.
When the final stretch started the three break-away riders had a 1.5 minutes lead over the rest of the contestants, and then it was almost sure that they would manage to reach the finishing line. Marek Rutkiewicz, who was that day, especially active, decided to fight for the victory in the race and he attacked right before entering Sobótka. He rode the last two kilometres alone, he crossed the finishing line with his hands raised, becoming the winner of Ślężański Mnich.
The fight for the second place at the finishing line was settled between the other two break-away riders: Robert Radosz and Dariusz Batek. Robert Radosz turned out to be better and it was him that stood on the second position of the podium.
Marek Rutkiewicz’s victory is the first success of the CCC Polsat Polkowice group in the 2012 season.
