Elia Viviani from the team of Liquigas-Cannondale became the winner of the first of two Italian classic cycle races of the 1.1 UCI category – GP Nobili Rubinetterie-Coppa Citta di Stresa. The cyclist of CCC Polsat Polkowice, Bartłomiej Matysiak, gave a good performance, taking the high, ninth place.
The route of the first classic race led through a rolling area along the town of Stresa and its total length was 166 kilometres. The cyclists had two 83-kilomentre-long laps to ride. Along most of the distance, from the 32nd kilometre four cyclists were escaping, among whom there was a Pole, Krzysztof Szczawiński. The escapees gained a significant advantage, which at one time was over four minutes. Unfortunately, thanks to the joint effort of the Lampre and Liquigas teams, 14 kilometres before the finishing line, the break-away got eliminated. It was clear that sprint cyclists would fight for the victory in the race.
The quickest at the finishing line in Stresa was Elia Viviani, who defeated his compatriot, Danilo Napolitano from Acqua & Sapone and Bernardo Riccio from d’Angelo & Antenucci – Nippo.
Bartłomiej Matysiak from CCC Polsat Polkowice crossed the finishing line in the high, ninth place.
