Jakub Kaczmarek finished stage 1 of Mazovia Tour among the sprinters, taking 5th place.
Info: 1.etap, 26th of July, Teresin – Teresin, 168km
Course: flat (eight 21-kilometer laps)
How it unfolded
Soon after the gun an 11-man group broke clear, establishing 40-second lead. CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders missed that move so they were forced to chase it. They closed the gap and the merge was followed by another attack. This time four runners went away – Matej Zahalka (SKC Tufo Prostejov) oraz Vasilii Strokau (Belarus), Maris Bogdanovics (Rietumu Bank Riga) and Jarosław Rębiewski (Domin Sport). They gained 3 minutes on the bunch.
Bogdanovics was the highest ranked escapee in GC (just 5 seconds back) and he managed to move up to virtual leader position after collecting 6 bonus seconds at intermediate sprints.
The escape got caught with 20km to go and Wibatech 7r Fuji was setting the pace late in the race. The finale didn’t saw anyone launching a massive attack and it was all decided in a bunch gallop. Alois Kankovsky (Elkov-Author), who is known for his many wins on the Polish soil, took the win, ahead of Grzegorz Stępniak (Wibatech 7r Fuji) and Eryk Latoń (Team Hurom). Jakub Kaczmarek was the CCC Sprandi Polkowice top finisher, coming in in 6th place.
Kankovsky took over the GC lead, while Marcin Białobłocki slipped to 6th.
