Mazovia Tour: Marycz kept the yellow jersey despite crash

Jaroslaw Marycz maintained his lead in the Lotto Mazovia Tour after stage 4, which was won by Alex Rasmussen (Riwal Cycling Team). That was his second victory in a row in this 5-day race.

Even though the stage was the longest of the 5-day race- 216 kilometers – there was no major breakaway. Nikola Aistrup ( Riwal Cycling Team), Jochem Hoekstra (Jo Piels) and Robert Radosz (BDC MarcPol) tried their luck but they were able to establish only one-minute gap. After this unsuccessful attack another one occurred. This time it was Piotr Skarzynski (Sante BSA Whistle) who went solo. His move ended the same way as his antecedents’. Sjors Roosen (Jo Piels) also broke clear but the peleton caught him with 5k before the finish.

Again it all came down to a bunch sprint. The roads were slippery after the rain and on the final left turn few riders slipped. One of them was the leader, Jaroslaw Marycz. Also runner-up in the overall classification, Eryk Laton (BDC MarcPol) went down. Nothing serious happened to them and they both crossed the line in good condition.

The sprint was won for the second time in the row by Alex Rasmussen (Riwal Cycling Team). Sprinter from Denmark beat Andris Smirnovs (Rietmu Delfin) and Maros Kovac (Dukla Trenczyn). Since the crash happened in the “safe zone” – 3k within the finish – Marycz kept his jersey. He is 16 seconds ahead of Eryk Laton and 23 seconds ahead of another BDC rider, Mateusz Komar.

The stage was very lively and long – said Marycz, who has been leading the race for 3 days, afterwards – There were many attacks, the situation in the front was changing very often, so you had to stay focused throughout the entire race. Thanks to my teammates we were able to bring the leader’s jersey all the way to the finish, despite the crash. It happened 250 meters before the line. I was well positioned, in third place. Rider in front of me lost control over his bike and fell down on slippery surface. He took me down with him and there was nothing I could do. Fortunately I came out if it with no serious injuries.
