First race for the CCC Sprandi Polkwice U23 riders, GP Izola, was decided in a 4-man sprint from a successful, early breakaway. Michał Paluta was the first “rider in orange” who crossed the line.
156-kilometers were ahead of the young squad, strengthen by more experienced Mateusz Taciak. First hour of racing saw many attacks, but nobody was able to break clear. Finally, after second KOM of the day, a 7-man group managed to pull away, and it included Michal Schlegel (Klein Constantia), Markus Freiberger (Tirol Cycling Team), Helmut Trettwer (WSA-Greenlife), Radoslav Rogina, Jure Golcer, Domen Novak (all Adria Mobil) and Markus Eibegger (Team Felbermayr – Simplon Wels).
They established a 1:50 lead and were later joined by two chasers Sebastian Schönberger (Tirol Cycling Team) and Siarhei Papok (Minsk Cycling Club). They kept the gap at over one minute level, as the peloton behind them was getting shattered with every kilometer.
Two out of six CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders managed to stay in the pack and contributed to the chase. With 20 km to go Eibegger, Rogina, Golcer and Freiberger decided to attack from the escape. They had around one minute over the bunch and pedaled hard to maintain the lead.
They work paid off as they held off the bunch and fought for the victory in a 4-man sprint. Jure Golcer could count on his teammate’s, Rogina’s, lead out. He capitalized on that help and took the win. He defeated Eibegger and Freiberger.
The chasing group arrived 35 seconds behind the winner and Michał Paluta was the team’s top finisher, as he claimed 17th place.
