“Orange squad” finishes safely in the bunch on stage 1 of Tour of Croatia

Sacha Modolo won stage 1 of Tour of Croatia and became first leader of the race. “Orange squad” finished safely in the bunch, not losing any time in GC before the most decisive stages.

Info: April 18th, stage 1, Osijek – Koprivnica, 227km

Weather: rainy, cold

Course: flat

First day of racing was a very long one, as there were 227 kilometers to cover. Because of the distance, the 5-man breakaway, which included Jannik Steimle (Team Felbermayr – Simplon Wels), Nikolay Trusov (Gazprom-RusVelo), Gregor Gazvoda (Adria Mobil), Ahmet Akdilek (Torku-Şekerspor), and Michael O’ Loughlin (Team Wiggins), was able to gain over 10 minutes of advantage.

Astana and Nippo Vini Fantini were leading the bunch, reducing the gap. They caught the attackers in the final 15km of racing.

It came down to a bunch gallop, which was won by Sacha Modolo (UAE Team Emirates). He bested Nippo – Vini Fantini duo, Eduard Michael Grosu and Nicolas Marini. CCC Sprandi Polkowice didn’t select any sprinter for this event, so “riders in orange” didn’t contest the sprint, arriving safely in the peloton, with the same time as the winner.
