Łukasz Owsian spent almost entire Italian race, Coppa Agostoni – Giro delle Brianze (1.1) in the breakaway and got caught just inside the final 10 kilometers.
Coppa Agostoni – Giro delle Brianze is a race, which last year was won by Davide Rebellin. Therefore he lined up at the start with good memories.
Both start and the finish were located in Lissone and the most demanding part of the competition involved 24,5-kilometer lap. It included three steep climbs, which were tackled four times. The final 35 kilometers of the course were mostly flat or downhill.
The escape was formed early in the race. Łukasz Owsian broke clear alongside Fausto Masnada (Lampre – Merida), Miguel Angel Benito, Hector Saez (Caja Rural – RGA), Alexander Kolobnev, Roman Kustadinchev (Gazprom – Rusvelo), Pier Paolo De Negri (NIPPO – Fantini), Elie Gesbert (Fortuneo – Vital Concept), Andrea Pasqualon (Team Roth), Nicola Genovese, Giorgio Bocchiola (D’Amico – Bottecchia), Filippo Fortin (GM Europa Ovini) and Nicola Gaffurini (Norda – MgKVis).
The peloton let them gain almost 6 minutes of advantage. On the last lap there was only 2 minutes left of that gap, and the leading group split apart. CCC Sprandi Polkowice stayed in the front though, with Masnada, Benito, Saez, Kustadinchev and Pasqualon.
It wasn’t too quiet in the bunch either. Many counterattacks were being launched and Fabio Aru was one of the most aggressive attackers. Eventually nobody was able to bridge across, but series of accelerations reduced the field drastically, to around 40 riders. Davide Rebellin and Felix Grossschartner were both among them.
In the final stretch Owsian’s group was working hard to maintain the lead, but also the chasing pack was going flat out. The peloton led by Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec reeled Owsian and most of the escapees in with 8km to go. Almost, because Benito tried a late solo move. He kept a 10-second gap, but got caught just before the line.
It came down to a bunch sprint finish, which was won by Sonny Colbrelli (Bardiani-CSF). Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida) took 2nd and Francesco Gavazzi (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec) 3rd.
Rebellin was the fastest “rider in orange”, claiming 13th place.
