Łukasz Owsian spent most of the day in the breakaway and finished off his impressive ride with both the stage victory and the yellow jersey.
Info: May 12th, Pieszyce – Bielawa, 140,2km
Course: hilly (six cat. 1 climbs, one cat.2)
We had expected that other teams will try to do something and attack right from the gun. It was important to keep things under control and follow every rider who could be a threat for us in the general standings. When Marek Rutkiewicz and Ziga Groselj pulled away I went with them, but later “Rutek” punctured and 5 other escapees joined us. Since we had the yellow jersey I didn’t have to pull in that break and I could save some energy – Owsian explains.
On the penultimate climb I decided to accelerate and only two riders managed to respond to that move, while on the last ascent, with over 10km to go I was able to go clear solo. I felt the presence of my rivals just behind me, so until the very end I didn’t know if I’ll be able to hold on.
We got another stage win and we still lead the GC, but we will celebrate when we bring the yellow jersey all the way to Jawor.
Very intense and lively stage was a successful one not only for new general, points and sprint classification leader, but also other CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders. They dominated top 11 as there were 5 “riders in orange” at the top of the standings – Jan Tratnik took 7th, Amaro Antunes 8th, Paweł Bernas 10th and Mateusz Taciak 11th.
Owsian, who also got 9 bonus seconds at intermediate sprints and 10 at the finish, bested in the end Ziga Groselj (Adria Mobil) and Patrick Schelling (Team Vorarlberg Santic). Josef Cerny (Elkov-Author) finished 4th, after a late attack from the bunch and moved up to 2nd overall. Previous yellow jersey wearer, Jan Tratnik now sits in 3rd.
