Łukasz Owsian joined the creme de la creme of Polish cycling, stepping onto the podium of the Nationals with Michał Kwiatkowski and Maciej Bodnar.
Info: June 24th, Ostróda – Ostróda, 204km
Course: undulating (10×20,4km)
The race was on right from the start, from lap number 1. It saw multiple of attacks, launched also by the big guns. 9-man breakaway was formed, which included Łukasz Owsian and also some World Tour riders, such as Michał Kwiatkowski, Michał Gołaś and Maciej Bodnar.
They established 30-second lead and the peloton kept them on such a short leash for the next 3 circuits. With 60km into the race the bunch was already very slim, with only 40 riders pedaling in the main group. Kamil Gradek (knee pain) and Alan Banaszek (illness) were not among them due to health issues.
On fourth lap the bunch eased up the pace and the gap increased to nearly 3 minutes. Three laps further Michał Kwiatkowski decided to pull away and his move caused the escape to break. All but Owsian, Gołaś and Bodnar were dropped from the leading group. They held on until the finish and the white-and-red jersey was decided in a sprint. Michał Kwiatkowski took the win, edging out Bodnar, while Owsian managed to sprint onto the podium, in 3rd.
I don’t have a medal from Road Polish Championships in my palmares so I’m happy to get one today. I also lost only to some world class riders, world champion and top TT specialist – Owsian explained afterwards. – The key group went clear with 7km into the race and that turned out to be decisive move. We all worked together and one couldn’t skip a turn, because that could have resulted in losing contact with breakaway in cross winds.
With 1km I tried something with an attack. Michał Gołaś had to sacrifice himself to catch me and lead out his teammates. That cost him in the finale and I was able to outsprint him to take final podium spot.
