How it unfolded
Breakaway was formed early in the race. Filippo Ganna (UAE Emirates), El Mehdi Chokri (Dimension Data for Qhubeka) and Patrick Gamper (Tirol Cycling Team) went clear and establish 7-minute lead. Chokri was unable to hold on to the leading group as he got dropped and the duo continued to push hard in the front.
The action heated up in the bunch, in the final 30km of racing. One attack was followed by another, but nothing stuck. Simone Ponzi was among those attackers, but eventually everything was brought back in.
Meanwhile in the front, Gamper left Ganna behind and was time trialing towards the finish. His ambitious attempt was neutralized just few hundred meters before the line and it was the sprinters who battled for victory. Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) won the rainy finish, ahead of Guillaume Boivin (Israel Cycling Academy) and Sacha Modolo (UAE Team Emirates). Michał Paluta was the team’s top finisher, coming in 19th place.
