Info: February 12th, Almeria-Almeria, 190km
Today we decided that I will be the man for the sprint. I felt strong and my teammates worked really hard for me. I wish I had more courage in the finally to fight for a better position for the sprint though – Maciej Paterski said afterwards.
Marcin Mrożek, Leszek Pluciński and Piotr Brożyna deserved a lot of credit – Piotr Wadecki, sporting director of CCC Sprandi Polkowice added. – It was their first race of the season and they did a great job. They were supporting our leader, protected him from the wind and made sure that he is riding in as comfortable position in the group as possible.
The breakaway of the day was formed with 13 kilometers into the race. It included Berden De Vries (Roompot – Nederlandse Loterij), Kenneth van Rooy (Sport Vlaanderen) and Timothy Dupont (Verandas Willems). For some time they were chased by Jorge Cubero (Burgos BH), but eventually he had to let it go and return to the bunch.
The escapees gained the maximum advantage of 7:30, which later leveled out at around 5 minutes. The peloton was very motivated to catch the break and they made it happen with 24km remaining.
Despite few attacks in the finale, it came down to a bunch sprint finish. Some of the top sprinters didn’t contest it due to the crash in the last kilometer. CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders managed to avoid it and Maciej Paterski found a way to take 7th place at the line.
Magnus Cort Nielsen (ORICA-Scott) grabbed a convincing win, besting Rudiger Selig (Bora – Hansgrohe) and Jens Debusschere (Lotto Soudal).
